What were your key motivations for joining Scope3?
Just before joining Scope3, I had reached a point in my career where I felt a strong desire to switch focus and do something meaningful; something that made a difference. While I had achieved great success and enjoyed working with my team at Oracle, I wanted to contribute to a meaningful cause. At the same time, I didn't want to let go of the skills I had acquired, particularly in the advertising and marketing space, which I have always been passionate about.
With that in mind, I sought out the intersection between purpose and passion. It required a niche that would allow me to combine both aspects. And I found it.
In addition to working with my fabulous former boss, joining Scope3 fulfilled my desire of working with brilliant and diligent people, while addressing climate change and having a genuine impact on our planet. I have also been able to continue and nurture the relationships I established during my time on the agency and consultancy side at Oracle, which is a real bonus.
All in all, joining Scope3 brought together the elements that were most important to me: purpose, passion, and people. It was an opportunity that felt like a no-brainer, as it perfectly encapsulated my aspirations and values.
What's been the best piece of career advice you've received?
Often in life, people follow the mantra ‘what’s meant to be will be’. However, I much prefer the slightly altered version of ‘what’s meant for me will be.’
It reminds me that certain things are destined for me, allowing for shifts and changes to occur naturally. It emphasizes the importance of keeping focused, putting in the necessary hard work, and trusting that recognition will come in due time. Rather than meticulously orchestrating or overengineering every aspect in life, it encourages staying true to oneself and understanding the mission at hand.
What's one myth you've come across when helping clients decarbonize?
The biggest misconception lies in the notion that it's an either-or situation between prioritizing the planet or pursuing profitability. When teams are expected to meet goals, drive key performance indicators, and generate revenue, there’s a fear that greater efforts towards external factors will detract from internal results.
However, the truth is that it's not an exclusive choice, but rather a symbiotic relationship. It is entirely possible to both contribute to the betterment of the planet and drive profitability. In fact, they complement each other and create an invaluable win-win scenario.
What is one lifestyle change you have made to be more sustainable?
I have a longstanding habit of purchasing 90% of my clothing second-hand.
This practice started roughly 20 years ago when I developed a passion for designer and vintage fashion. During that time, I discovered the existence of a thriving secondary market for such goods, particularly through platforms like eBay in its early days. I have always loved fashion as a means to express my creative side, I just couldn’t get past how incredibly wasteful it is for someone to discard an item after wearing it only once or twice.
Not only do I purchase pre-owned items, but I also sell or donate my own belongings once I no longer need them. This creates a cyclical process that not only benefits me personally, but also contributes to sustainable consumption practices.
What are your favorite activities outside of work?
As mentioned above, I'm truly passionate about the aftermarket fashion scene. Growing up, I attended a Catholic school where uniforms were mandatory, leaving little room for self-expression. As a result, I quickly learned to appreciate the sense of liberation and joy of putting together looks, as well as the art of matching and styling – which has stayed with me my entire adult life.
The thing that gives me the most joy in life is spending time with my children. My sons, William and Emmett, have entered a phase of distinct individuality and wild inappropriate humor, both of which bring me profound joy and pride. In my downtime, I also love spending time with our 14-year-old French Bulldog, whom I affectionately refer to as the "Betty White" of Bulldogs. Sophie brings me a great sense of peace, joy and laughter.
Name one natural wonder that you find the most inspiring.
In March, I had the incredible opportunity to venture out West, exploring Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding regions of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The natural beauty was breath-taking and it exceeded my expectations. Growing up in New Hampshire, I had always appreciated the beauty of the mountains, but the landscapes out West were a new level of awe-inspiring.
Seeing my oldest son's reaction to the sights was truly priceless. Witnessing his sense of wonder and awe added an extra layer of joy to the whole experience. It's truly special when people of all ages can appreciate and be inspired by the magnificence of nature.
